 Today, I would like to write about the Hotel des Mille Collines, where Denis is working as director for almost a year.

Hotel des Mille Collines

The hotel has a long history and is among the oldest hotels in Rwanda. The hotel was built in the seventies and was called at that time Hotel Rwanda. It has 112 rooms and suites, several restaurants, bar, meeting rooms and a ballroom. The hotel has 163 employees and is a major employer in Kigali.

During the genocide, which began in April 1994, the hotel played an important role.

It was one of the darkest periods of the country. For 100 days Hutus killed more than a million Tutsis and moderate Hutus.

During this time, up to 2,000 people found protection in the hotel and their lives were saved. The hotel had opened its doors for those seeking protection. The people were provided with water and food and accommodated in the rooms, corridors or in the gardens.

Some were born in this time in the hotel, others were married and most importantly, people had a future.

  The story of this time was documented in the film "Hotel Rwanda". The hotel was also the site for the Canadian Romance "A Sunday in Kigali". The hotel's history is described in many books.

The hotel is now called "Hotel des Mille Collines", translates the Hotel of a Thousand Hills. It is very centrally located in the business district of the city.

 Heute möchte ich über das Hotel des Mille Collines schreiben, indem Denis seit fast einem Jahr als Direktor arbeitet.

Das Hotel hat eine lange Geschichte und gehört zu den ältesten Hotels in Ruanda. Das Hotel wurde in den siebziger Jahren gebaut und hieß zur damaligen Zeit noch Hotel Ruanda. Es hat 112 Zimmer und Suiten, mehrere Restaurants, Bar, Meetingzimmer und einen Ballsaal. Das Hotel hat 163 Angestellte und ist ein wichtiger Arbeitgeber in Kigali.

Während des Genozides der im April 1994 begann, spielte das Hotel eine wichtige Rolle.

Es war eine der dunkelsten Zeiten des Landes. 100 Tage lang töteten Hutus mehr als eine Millionen Tutsis und moderate Hutus.

Während dieser Zeit fanden bis zu 2.000 Menschen Schutz im Hotel und ihre Leben wurden gerettet. Das Hotel hatte seine Türen für die Schutzsuchenden geöffnet. Die Menschen wurden mit Wasser und Lebensmittel versorgt und leten in den Zimmern, Gängen oder in den Gärten.

Einige wurden in dieser Zeit im Hotel geboren, andere heirateten und am aller wichtigsten die Menschen hatten eine Zukunft.

 Die Geschichte dieser Zeit wurde im Film “Hotel Ruanda” festgehalten. Das Hotel war auch Schauplatz für den kanadischen Liebesfilm “A Sunday in Kigali”. Die Geschichte des Hotels wird auch in vielen Büchern beschrieben.

Das Hotel heisst heute „Hotel des Mille Collines“ , übersetzt das Hotel der tausend Hügel. Es liegt sehr zentral im Gechäftsviertel der Stadt.

El hotel tiene una larga historia y es uno de los hoteles más antiguos de Ruanda. El hotel fue construido en los años setenta y se llamó en ese momento Hotel Ruanda. Cuenta con 112 habitaciones y suites, varios restaurantes, bar, salas de reuniones y un salón de baile. El hotel tiene 163 empleados y es un importante empleador en Kigali.

Durante el genocidio, que comenzó en abril de 1994, el hotel desempeñó un papel importante.

Fue uno de los períodos más oscuros del país. Durante 100 días los hutus mataron a más de un millón de tutsis y hutus moderados.

Durante este tiempo, hasta 2.000 personas encontraron protección en el hotel y sus vidas fueron salvadas. El hotel había abierto sus puertas para aquellos que buscan protección. Las personas se les proporcionó agua y comida y acomodó en las habitaciones, pasillos o en los jardines.
